Quick answers

What's the difference between a fade, a taper and an undercut?
A fade is a graduated blend down to very short hair or skin. A taper is a shorter, more conservative graduation usually limited to the sideburns and neckline. An undercut keeps the sides one short length with no blend, disconnected from a longer top. See the fade guide, taper guide and undercut guide.
What do clipper guard numbers mean?
Each guard leaves a fixed length, in 1/8-inch steps: #1 is 1/8" (3mm), #2 is 1/4" (6mm), #3 is 3/8" (10mm), #4 is 1/2" (13mm), up to #8 at 1" (25mm). The full chart is in our clipper guard sizes guide.
How often should I get a haircut?
Hair grows about half an inch (1.25cm) a month. Skin fades look crisp for 2–3 weeks, most short cuts for 3–5 weeks, and longer styles can go 8–12 weeks between trims. More detail in how often to get a haircut.
What's my hair type?
Hair is commonly typed 1 (straight), 2 (wavy), 3 (curly) and 4 (coily), each with A–C subtypes. Knowing yours helps you pick cuts and products that work with your texture. See the hair types chart.
